To achieve self-care, you have to think beyond just exercise and nutrition. We often think that to take care of ourselves, we need to exercise consistently and eat properly. Experts will disagree.

Wellness Pillars For Self-care

According to Tanya Etessam, a fitness and wellness expert, there are 8 pillars of wellness that we should focus on to truly take care of ourselves. To each, it’s important to make a commitment that you can stick with to achieve self-care:

Physical

Physical wellness is about healthy nutrition, regular sleep, and exercise. Don’t overcomplicate this. Make sure you move daily, make healthy food choices, prioritize sleep, and schedule your exercise.

Social

Having face-to-face human interactions, effective communication, and the capacity to be intimate. Join a community group, club, or organization to meet new people and make new friends.

I added this last one because mental self-care is probably the most important to achieving self-care. Recognize your unique combination of gifts, abilities, passion, education, and life experience that makes you who you are. Find your purpose and run with it. What are you good at? How can you improve your job to grow in the company? If you are miserable in your current job, how can you make it better? Figure out what you truly want to accomplish, write it down, and go. Stop settling, start living.

Spiritual

How you treat others matters in your spiritual wellness. Honesty, fairness, compassion, respect, kindness, gratitude should be part of that pillar. Make someone smile each day. Help others feel appreciated and acknowledged. If you have previous counselling experience and are interested in helping others, think of becoming a therapist. Saving, investing, building assets, and planning for the future. Create a budget and stick to it. This includes the basics of day-to-day budgeting and saving for shorter-term goals.

Environmental

Giving back to the community by volunteering and giving back to those who are less fortunate is part of the environmental pillar. The reciprocal relationship between an individual and the environment such as community service, gardening, recycling is something you can take on.

These 8 wellness pillars will help you achieve self-care. Over and above following them, embrace the value of advice. Whether that’s through your learning, gut feeling, or those around you. Through holistic planning and seeking advice from an advisor, a therapist, even a friend can get to know you and your unique needs. Take advantage of potential retirement savings, take free exercise classes, join a volunteer group, or hep others through their struggles. Small steps turn into big leaps later.

On March 16th, it’ll be a year I haven’t set f On March 16th, it’ll be a year I haven’t set foot 🦶 in a gym. The videos you see when you swipe left are some of the last large workout groups I’ve attended with @stadiumworkout before it ceased due to the pandemic last year. I owe it to such groups to have embraced outside workouts during the cold weather, giving me ideas on how I can incorporate cardio and strength with little equipment. Hopefully one ☝🏼 day the group restarts and we can all reunite. For now I dedicate my winter 🥶 workouts to the organizers ☺️.

Walker, astronaut Mae C. Jemison, open-heart surgeon Daniel Hale Williams, inventor Garret Morgan, media mogul Oprah Winfrey and "Father of Black History" Carter G. Woodson, who lobbied extensively to establish Black History Month as a nationwide celebration, among many others. 

Black history is not just a month to be celebrated but something that we should always commemorate. Everything it encompasses cannot be covered in a tiny Instagram post. It’s so rich, so full and yet so much more we need to learn about it passed the mainstream and popular figures. Take some time and uncover a part of the black past, present and future regularly to appreciate its magnitude and how it shaped the world we live in today.

I was inspired to show off this photo after seeing I was inspired to show off this photo after seeing @sweetzuzudesigns wallpaper DIY. If anyone knows me, they know how much I love Carrara marble (in fact the table in the middle is also Carrara marble that we made, my feed has the video of the project). This wall stops everyone in their tracks as they think it’s real marble but it’s actually high quality wallpaper worth every penny and more from @photowall_sweden. If you’re looking for wallpaper, I strongly recommend them. I’ve purchased previous ones before but none of rest quality like this one. I recommend upgrading and getting the one that’s easy to clean. I plan on doing the other side of the wall to make it look like a full block of marble. You can swipe right to see what the in progress looked like and previous wall and set up design. Over the years my style has embraced simplicity, natural materials and light tones wit a touch of black.
