With warmer weather on the way, it’s time for a wardrobe upgrade. Summer means breaking out fun dresses, new accessories, bright colours, and brand-new styles.

However, with so many variations in summer outfits, it’s all too easy to have a fashion misstep. How many times have you seen people struggle to put all the right pieces together and just cringe wishing you can tell them “Did you ACTUALLY think that WORKS together?” I get it, not everyone is able to figure out how to style things together, but it’s easy to follow some basic rules that can help them.

Summer Outfits No No’s

If they’re trying to put their best fashion foot forward, then you’ll want to tell them to avoid these common summer style mistakes.

1. Wearing Too Many Layers

This is common in warmer weather when you want to plan for both hot and cooler days. If you’re also not comfortable with your body, you may be layering summer dresses with leggings, which can be a little much.

Do yourself a favour and shop for summer dresses online that are flattering, and you feel confident wearing. Sometimes a little less is more when it comes to summer dresses and seasonal clothing choices.

2. Too Revealing

This problem also commonly occurs when you wear clothing that doesn’t suit your style and body type. Short shorts and crop tops are always fun, but they may not be appropriate in every setting, or together. Opt for one or the other if the occasion permits.

You may want to add a tank under sheer fabrics and make sure that you can’t see your underwear with any of your clothing choices.

For more formal settings like the workplace, add a blazer, cardigan or sweater to stay appropriate.

3. Wrong Sizes

It’s tempting to hide any problem areas with extra fabric. However, wearing clothing that isn’t the right size may actually make you look frumpy.

Oversized isn’t a great look overall unless you’re tall and rail thin. Be cautious with these choices. Some oversize pieces like a larger top may go well with a fitted bottom or add a belt to give yourself a waistline. Make sure that you can see and enjoy your curves in whatever you choose to wear this summer.

4. Animal Prints

Although some people love animal prints (me included), this is an area where you should show caution. Leopard print especially has been abused in the fashion world. The best place to use animal prints is probably your accessories. Tights and other clothing items can be overwhelming. Other prints that may be better are black and white animal prints or tortoiseshell.

You should also make sure that any of these prints are on a good quality fabric to avoid looking cheap.

5. Going Way Over Budget

Although summer is a great time to mix up your wardrobe, keep in mind that you only wear these clothes a few months of the year. There’s no point in spending your year’s entire clothing allowance on summer clothes.

Also, trends change each year. You may not even wear items more than one year. Keep a classic wardrobe of summer clothes and add a few fun items each year. You’ll find that you get a lot more for your money with this tip.

6. Too Many Colours

Summer is the time for bright colours, but you may do better by avoiding too many bright colours at a single time. Vibrant and pastel shades look great in the warmer months and colour blocking is a huge trend. However, you’re better off sticking with two colours in your outfit. You may be able to add in up to three or more if you have prints on, but remember, less is more.

7. Torn, Creased or Discoloured

There are times where frayed, faded or ripped jeans and t-shirts may look cool, like if you’re going to the beach or an outdoor concert for instance. But a distressed look should not be confused with a neglected one.  If your cardigan, t-shirt or stockings are pilling, then it will just be an eyesore. So, if you want to do a more vintage or distressed look, go ahead, but don’t assume that a peeling faux leather jacket or loose threads looks edgy.

8. Wearing Thick Fabrics

Depending on where you live, your summer may be warmer or cooler. However, you should choose primarily clothes that are made from lighter fabrics. Thick fabrics will weigh you down and make you sweat. Cotton fabrics offer enough coverage without being too thick or heavy in most cases. Make sure to check the fabric before purchasing to see how well it breathes.

9. Wearing the Wrong Underwear

Unlike winter clothing, your tops are often halter neck or tank tops which make underwear choices challenging. Make sure that you find bras that offer adequate support but can’t be seen under your clothing.

Look for clear straps or supportive strapless bras for the best results.

I really need to find a better strapless bra (my bra straps are showing as I type this with my top!! 😦 ) for the summer. Thanks for all of these tips. I agree with the layers, I try to keep layering to a minimum and I may just bring along a denim jacket if I know the a/c is going to be on over blast!

yes a strapless is a must for the summer. I actually don’t like them but in order to make the outfit shine, we’ll need to keep our undergarments exactly that!
