This Healthy Workplace Month, Reset your Corporate Wellness

Many of us spend the majority of our waking hours work. We rarely think about the impact our work environment can have on our well-being. Whether it’s at home, in an office or anywhere in between, there’s always room for improvement when it comes to your corporate wellness.

Corporate Wellness 101

I just started a new job this week and it happens to fall on October is Healthy Workplace Month (in Canada).

With a new job comes new challenges but a chance to create healthier routines. The Healthy Workplace Month is about making an effort to creating corporate wellness.

Why not take this opportunity to challenge yourself to make healthy changes to your workspace?

Get Your 20-20-20

For many of us, a day at work means long hours in front of a computer.

According to the Ontario Association of Optometrists, excessive screen time can lead to:

  • blurred vision
  • headaches
  • tearing
  • dry and irritated eyes

If you’re feeling the strain, try the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, take a 20 second break from your screen and focus on something at least 20 feet away from you.

To treat the symptoms of dry eye, keep eye drops handy. HydraSense® introduced 3 new products for dry eyes this year that are worth a second look.

They are preservative-free and give you long-lasting relief that’s also gentle on the eyes. These eye drops for dry eyes:

  • Contain a clinically proven, naturally sourced lubricant: sodium hyaluronate
  • Feature an innovative sterile bottle with a built-in filter, allowing hydraSense® to be preservative-free
  • Are phosphate-free

Colour Your World

The colours around us can affect how we think and feel. Your corporate wellness depends on the hues around you!

For your corporate wellness, try adding a pop of colour to your workspace, even if it’s just a bright picture frame or festive mouse pad.

Dressing up your surroundings can help your mind gear up for work, de-stress or bring joy to your day.

Make a Break For it

Breaking up your routine is a great way to clear your head and relieve stress.

You may be stuck at work for 8 hours, but you don’t have to take it sitting down. Establish corporate wellness by:

  • getting up during the day to bounce ideas off of a coworker
  • taking a walking meeting with your team
  • walking to a further coffee spot to get your cup of joe
  • doing a little dance if you’re feeling brave

If you work from home, a change of scenery may give you new perspective on a tough project. Try hitting a coffee shop or even renting a shared workspace for a few days a week.

Bring Comfy Back

Do you spend a lot of time in an office chair? A few simple tweaks to your workspace can help you cut down on back pain.

Keep your spine straight by raising your monitor up to eye level and positioning your knees at a 90-degree angle.

If you need fast relief to get back to work, ALEVE® lasts up to 12 hours with just one caplet or liquid gel capsule. It provides effective relief of:

  • arthritis and pain of inflammation
  • joint and body pain
  • muscular ache
  • backache
  • headaches
  • migraine pain

It’s no fun trying to get work done when your back hurts, so keep some ALEVE® on hand.

Start a Healthy Lunch Club

Proper nutrition is an important part of staying alert and energized at work.

If you’re finding it difficult to pack healthy food and snacks throughout the week, share the burden with a few close friends by starting a healthy lunch club.

Take turns putting together the next day’s lunch for your group. It’s a great way to share your positive new habits with your coworkers.

Get Going With an Exercise Club

While this one may be difficult for some people it can become a lot easier once you create a group and you are all accountable to one another.

Organizing a running, walking, yoga club at work can really help keep you and colleagues healthy. Having others do it with you will motivate you and keep you consistent with your exercise routine.

If group exercises aren’t your thing, you can always do it alone. Be sure to book time slots in your calendar to ensure that you actually get it done!

Be Consistent With Your Skincare Routine

This one may not necessarily refer to your time at work, at least not when it comes to your face. Ensuring that your body is well rested and nourished is essential to looking fresh, alert and beautiful for your workday.

Using skincare products to exfoliate, hydrate and illuminate your skin will go a long way in keeping the stress effects away from your face.

For some daily anti-aging and hydration the Image Skincare The Max Stem Cell Cream will be your go-to.

Apart from your face, your hands need some nourishment as well, especially in the colder months. Making sure you keep a hand cream tube or bottle in your drawer and/or purse is good idea to keeping your hands moisturized.

Seek Professional Help

It is always recommended to speak to someone about your troubles to help relieve any stress that you may be feeling at home, at work or elsewhere. Even if it’s just advice on how to deal with stress, professional counselling can go a long way.

The Gist of it

Ensuring corporate wellness isn’t as hard as we may think it is. All it takes is some planning and organization to keep you going.

Just like you know to turn on your computer in the morning when you start, remembering to do these things for your wellness will become second nature.

Above all, don’t forget to get enough sleep at night! All the corporate wellness programs you can set up won’t equivocate to anything if your body is not getting the rest it needs.

What can you do this month to encourage a healthy environment where you work?

Rania, this is great post with some really helpful tips for any type of working environment. I work from home and am always changing where I am sitting with my computer. Very often when the weather permits it, I take my laptop to either my front porch or my backyard to do work and it is so invigorating to work in the fresh air! Actually, I really need to work outside more often than I do. Or I pack it all up and head to a coffee shop to get some writing done. Thanks for sharing for these great tips!

Thanks for sharing your tips too! I love working from a coffee shop and I think I would do that all the time if I worked from home. The only inconvenience would be having to go pee almost every hour and packing or leaving my stuff lol. As comfy as it is to work from home, as human being we need to socialise and see other.

The Trucker convoy is still going strong and sprea The Trucker convoy is still going strong and spreading around the world. The trump cheerleaders found themselves another excuse to occupy institutional buildings and the cities that house them. While I too am fed up of the mandates, I don’t believe their plights are justified. Yes it’s frustrating the flip flop between closures and reopening, and while they are implemented at times to limit the spread as to alleviate the strain on the healthcare system, as annoying as they are, I don’t think it’s a reason to be shouting freedom on parliament hill, harassing residents or blatantly displaying racist symbols and rhetoric. For the most part, mandates are not stopping anyone from living, going out, even travelling! They’re a temporary inconvenience to our daily lives, but in due time, will be lifted as COVID becomes more manageable. This isn’t the worlds first go around at a pandemic. Each round takes time to return things back to normal…Just go back to 1918 to see what happened…were those public health measures still in effect 5 or 10 years later?? My heart goes out to businesses and employees whose livelihoods have suffered, especially as gov assistance winds down. But like all trends, major events force humanity to readapt (think automation). Vacancy rate has been at an all time high and unemployment back to pre-pandemic levels, proof that many employees and businesses have retooled and transformed. If those convoys feel strongly about protesting, they should protest for healthcare reform. Canada is ranking as the worst in the G7 for healthcare. Our system is riddled with administrators, not enough doctors or nurses. Caps are put in residency spots and foreign trained healthcare workers waste expertise on low-skilled work as they’re deemed “not good enough” to work in the Canadian healthcare system…now that’s something worth shouting freedom for! Swipe left for more.
