An outfit is made or broken by accessories. You can put together a great outfit but if you choose badly when it comes to accessorizing, you could ruin it completely. On the other hand, a fairly drab outfit can be turned into a stunning one with a few carefully placed additions.

The biggest mistake that people make when they are trying to accent their clothes is choosing quantity over quality. I’ve talked about overly accessorizing before (ok like ages ago when I was but a spring chicken). Throwing on as many accessories as possible doesn’t mean that you’ll look good.

Must Haves You Need

To get it right, you need to pick a couple of great ones that really make your outfit pop. Having the essential accessories at hand all the time means that you will never be without a great outfit again.

Sunglasses

Sunglasses are another topic I’ve previously discussed on the blog. You may only use these for half of the year, but they are still an accessorizing essential. Plus, who says the sun doesn’t come out in winter? It sure does, and those days are usually far colder than their cloudy counterparts (At least here in Canada).

A good tip is to make sure that you don’t limit yourself to the women’s section. The shapes that you find in the men’s section are slightly different but they’ll look equally as good on women so take advantage.

Be bold with your choice of shape and colour but have a plainer pair as well. Choose black for functionality and for those more formal time, such as at work, a meeting, or business travel. Then get yourself one to wear the rest of the time. These ones can be as funky as you’d like them to be.

Necklaces

A good piece of fashion jewellery is a brilliant way to add a bit of sparkle to a dull top but it’s easy to end up drowning in jewels so make sure you pick carefully.

Smaller pieces are best with a more interesting top because they don’t overpower the rest of the outfit. If you are wearing something plain then you can get away with something a bit larger and more colourful.

Handbags

You’re always going to be carrying a handbag so it’s important to make it a working part of your outfit. You only need to get a 2 or 3 options, that should do you for most situations.

A plain black purse is always a good idea for those times when you need to be understated or pack light for travel. As a general rule, stay within neutral colours during the day, such as white, black, pastel colours. When it gets dark, it’s time to bring out crazy!

Lipsticks

You don’t need to go heavy on the makeup to look great, a good lipstick is sometimes all you need. In the winter, it’s better to use lighter shades that will match your skin tone better. Once the sun is out and you’ve started building up a bit of tan for those of us who spend most of the year layered up in clothes shielding from the brutal cold, you can move onto something a bit darker.

The main thing to remember is that a lipstick looks different on everybody so experiment to find the ones that match you the best.

The Gist of it

Ensuring you’ve got what you need in must haves prepares you for the season ahead. While the items here might as well apply to all 4 seasons, it’s an opportunity to reinterpret them every time depending on the season, whether it’s the sunglasses, necklace, handbag or lipstick.
