Nike have been in the business of designing shoes for a very long time. While the heritage is definitely and unequivocally sport, the transition from sport to essential fashion has been a seamless one. It is what I call the fashionable running shoe.
Back in the Day
Arguably this all began with the introduction of the Nike Air Max back in 1987. This was a design that was undeniably a sports shoe that had all the necessary functionality to do that job and to do it well. But it was taken up by huge numbers of people who saw it for the design icon it has since become.
Fashionable Running Shoe is the New Black
In the 28 years that have passed since the introduction of the very first Air Max, fashion hasn’t stood still for a second. Thankfully, Nike have kept pace. They brought out shoe after shoe that innovatively bridged the gap between the serious sports-person and the full-fledged fashionista effortlessly.
Take for example this fashionable running shoe, the Nike Air max QS – “Escape” Pack:
This fashionable running shoe was released last December. Echoes of classic coordinates take you back to the days of hot jazz and hot rods. Wear them with a suit or casual trousers and a sweater and you’re bringing a little taste of The Great Gatsby to your outfit.
That said, the Nike sports ethos is still at the core of the design. Comfort, practicality and support aren’t sacrificed in the fashionable running shoe construction. In fact, this shoe will work just as well in the gym or on the road as it will when you match it with your favourite retro outfits.
If you hanker after something that has the same level of function but maybe a little more 21st century, have a look at this:
It’s a re-run of the Infrared model, re-imagined for 2015, and released this month. Featuring a textured upper with eye-popping detail in the lace eyelets, the classic Nike sole, and you have a shoe that speaks of comfort and classic good looks in an understated package; perfectly at home in every environment and any situation.
If the black on black look doesn’t grab you though, it’s also available in a spectacular red on red. It also comes in a nice, if slightly old-school black leather, grey Nubuck and white mesh version.
Nike will not let the grass grow under their feet when there’s a prospect of running or playing something on that grass. Latest highlights include the wildly floral City collection, with an all-over design inspired by major cities:
- London
- Tokyo
- New York
Flowers and colourways to turn heads.
